Moderate and varied: climate and weather in Germany
Summers are usually pleasantly warm and winters are moderately cold. Snow is possible but more common in the south and at higher altitudes. In the North German Lowlands, such as Bremen, and along the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts, summers are mild and winters are not too cold. Further south and east, the temperature differences between seasons are sometimes significantly greater.
From June to September, Germany is at its warmest, with average monthly temperatures ranging from 21 to 25 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperatures are recorded in January. Most rainy days occur in winter, but showers are also common in summer, especially in the mountains. Another typical feature of Germany is that the weather can change quickly. A sunny morning can turn into a rainy afternoon - and vice versa. This is why the famous saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing," is almost a philosophy of life here.
Climate change has led to a noticeable warming trend: 2024 was the warmest year since records began, with an increase of approximately 2.5 degrees Celsius since 1881.
Northern Germany and Bremen: Fresh air and a maritime climate
The climate in northern Germany, as in Bremen, is more strongly influenced by the sea. Summer temperatures are slightly milder and winter temperatures are slightly less cold than in the south. However, it is often windier, and it rains more frequently, though usually in short showers. The average annual temperature in Bremen is 10.2 degrees Celsius.
Spring: A new beginning and a spirit of optimism
From March onward, Germany slowly awakens from its winter slumber. Temperatures rise, parks and gardens fill up, and the days become significantly longer. The many blossoming trees and spring flowers are particularly beautiful. Average daily maximum temperatures in spring (March to April): 8 to 18 degrees Celsius.
Summer: Long days and lots of outdoor life
For many, summer (June to August) is the most beautiful time in Germany. Temperatures usually range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, and heat waves tend to be brief. Thanks to the long days - it often stays light until 10 p.m. - life takes place outdoors. Enjoy picnics in the park, barbecues in the garden, festivals, city celebrations, and much more!
Fall: Colorful landscapes
Fall brings cooler temperatures and colorful landscapes as the leaves turn golden brown. Although rain and wind are more common, you can still enjoy this time of year with a good windproof jacket.
Winter: Cold days and a cozy atmosphere
Winters in Germany are usually cold but rarely extreme. Temperatures around freezing are normal, snow and ice are possible, and it gets dark early. Winter has its own special magic, especially during Advent: Christmas markets offer warming mulled wine, and there are fairy lights, candlelight, and a contemplative atmosphere.
