International Graduate Center

Program overview

MES students in the Bremen town hall

The program has been designed to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date study of economic and political dynamics in Europe. Graduates from both Europe and beyond will develop an in-depth understanding of the central issues facing Europe at all levels of the economy and administration, and acquire the tools to work with European institutions. Studies in European private and public management, in European economics, law and politics, an intensive seminar in Brussels plus an optional period of practical training offer an ideal combination for acquiring theoretical knowledge, management training, practical skills and European expertise. Our unique blend of academic expertise and application-oriented classes make this an exceptional experience.

The faculty is composed of international and national university lecturers and EU practitioners. Emphasis is laid on an interdisciplinary approach in teaching and learning, group work, discussions and a lively exchange between participants. Due to the international set-up of the program, students will be confronted with the need to cope with the cultural and individual differences that arise in a multicultural setting, familiarising them with working across cultures and working in international teams.

Experience counts! We have offered this program since 1999 and have gathered a lot of expertise along the way. We strive to improve the program constantly, adding new optional courses and refining the structure all the time. Students´ feedback plays a crucial role.

Key features of the program include:

  • Practice-oriented post-graduate education with an international emphasis
  • Studies in European public and private management
  • One year full-time

  • Intensive seminar in Brussels

"One more objective that could be accomplished with the completion of the master program was to improve my interpersonal and team work skills in an international environment. I was able to enhanced my skills and abilities in working in international and multidisciplinary teams. The interdisciplinary approach in teaching and learning of the Master, group work, discussions and lively exchange of ideas between students, professors and professionals from all over the world, involved the process of coping with cultural and individual differences that arose in the multicultural setting that was conformed. The diversity of cultures and backgrounds of both students and lectures was a key issue in the learning process. The environment suited perfectly the area of study of the master (European Studies) and fostered a rightful discussion and teamwork, since it consisted of people from EU-15 Member States (Germany and Greece), from new Member States (Poland and Latvia), from accessing countries (Bulgaria), from countries with which the Union holds a special relation (Turkey) and from other third countries (Jamaica, China, Moldavia, Vietnam and Mexico); with educational backgrounds in fields such as Law, Economics, Marketing, Business, International Relations, Political Sciences, etc. In this regard, the courses on cultural implications of business and international team building, together with the presentation skills course and the different introductory courses that were offered contributed to understand each other, collaborate with enthusiasm, have a more standardised level of knowledge in the lectures and seminars, and generate a constructive and reach discussion environment from where multi-scope conclusions were made. The faculty was composed of international and national university lecturers and EU practitioners. Among them we had Germans, French, British, Irish and Americans, holding a PHD degree and years of experience in the research area or with international experience in the business field. Their knowledge, commitment and guidance along the two semesters led each one of us to define the area of interest for our Master Thesis." (Marisol Oropeza, MES graduate 04/05)
